I Wouldn't Change a Thing

Author: Melissa Simonin

"Mom... didn't I grow inside of you?"
she asked the other day.
"you grew inside your birthmom,"
I was quick to say.

A pause, a sigh, and then she said
"I wish I'd grown inside of you."
A pause, a sigh, and I replied
"Sometimes I wish that too."

"I wish I could have been there
from the moment you came to be,
felt you close beneath my heart,
safe inside of me."

"I wish I could have been there
the moment you were born,
welcoming you in to this world,
keeping you safe and warm."

"But I couldn't possibly create
the precious miracle that is you,
you'd not be exactly who you are
without your birthmother carrying you."

"So I'd not change a single thing
and risk you being someone other;
you are perfect just the way you are,
I love being your mother."

"Dear one, what a blessing--
though you weren't born to me,
to be my precious daughter--
you didn't have to be."

"As a matter of fact the thought occurs,
though you weren't born to me--
to be my precious daughter
you couldn't be!"

"So I'm glad things happened as they did,
glad that you are you."
She laughed and then ran off to play,
saying as she went "me too."
